If your discs are really worn or like me you're upgrading to vented discs you'll need to push the piston back. Open your brake fluid reservoir otherwise you're pushing against a closed system and you'll have a hard time.
Be aware that the reservoir may overfill if you wind the piston back a lot and this is a bad thing. Once mine got close to overfilling I soaked some of the brake fluid out with a bit of kitchen roll till it was at the right level. Avoid contact with the brake fluid if possible.. especially your paint.
I reckon using a block of wood is a good idea so you don't damage any seals.
